What are the Types of Alimony in New Jersey?

AlimonyThe state of New Jersey recognizes four different types of alimony:

  • Limited Duration—For marriages of 20 years or less. The maximum available length of Limited Duration Alimony is the length of the marriage, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • Open Durational—Alimony with no determined end-date which can be awarded in marriages of 20 years or longer.
  • Rehabilitative—Financial support awarded to a spouse to pursue job training or education to lead to financial independence. The spouse must have a plan for his or her training or education.
  • Reimbursement—Awarded when one spouse has supported the other through an advanced education with the expectation of benefiting from a future salary generated by the education.

You may be eligible for alimony depending on your relationship, financial circumstances, and any other relevant factors. A court takes 14 different alimony factors into account before awarding alimony.
